Medium One (M1) is a multi-media design company specializing in graphic, new media and web-site design. Originally a munitions factory, the existing 12,500 SF space is comprised of three separate buildings that were subsequently linked to form a single office complex with three “”wings”. Each wing exhibited a distinct character, each uniquely stunning in their original state. The largest space is constructed of concrete block with poured concrete floors, another of post and beam construction with high wood ceilings and strip floors, a third with similar floors but with lower, more intimate drywall ceilings.
The architectural concept focused on the preservation and enhancement of the as-found quality of the three spaces. Strategies included inserting sleekmodern materials such as glass, stainless steel and high-gloss
mahogany finishes to contrast against the rough and raw textures of the existing. New mechanical and electrical components were left exposed and designed in both material and pattern to enhance the industrial aesthetic of the space.
The functional programme included reception areas, a large boardroom, several project rooms, executive offices, cafe/bar, lunch area, open workstations and creative studios. The scope of work encompassed custom furniture design including various workstation types, bar stools, and the selection of lighting and office seating.
